The largest temple of the village is dedicated to Taxiarches Michael and Gabriel who are also the patrons of the village.
An interesting fact is that the old bell of the church is now in the church of St. Mark in Venice after some residents took it with them when they left for Italy fearing the revenge of the Turks as they had fought against them on the side of the Venetians.
Holy Temple of Taxiarches
The first references to the existence of the temple are from 1696. The celebration takes place on 8th of November of each year.
It is perhaps the greatest pride of the residents who, in addition to the weekly church services, have connected the holy temple with particularly emotional personal moments such as marriages, baptisms of their children and the final greeting to their pass-away family members .
The temple and its forecourt with its wonderful pine trees is also a meeting place for many, both residents and expatriates.
Especially during Holy Week and Easter the atmosphere is really overwhelming, chanting can be heard throughout almost the whole village during the afternoon and evening hours. On Great Friday, the procession of the epitaph decorated with flowers starts from there, which is carried on the shoulders of the residents and follows the route of the central streets before returning again to the church.
Participants witness an authentic experience of the Greek Christian tradition.
